The Pink ladies braved the intensely hot conditions last Saturday to tailgate at the first University of Richmond home game. It was a smash hit, despite the fact that you could grill a hot dog on the tailgate of your truck, sans grill. We gave out Pink koozies, raffle tickets (for a chance to win a serious goody bag), and most importantly, about 100 bottled waters. Seriously kids, hydrate yourselves!
The day was a happy reminder what it was like to be 19, energetic, and totally carefree. It was also the start of being truly fashion conscious for many of us, and these girls had it going on! We recognized many of our well clad
customers in the crowd, and we definitely met some new ones.At the very least we got to relive some happy collegiate memories. Thanks for that U of R! We hope to see you at the next one.
Sometimes I wish I had the ability to look in on everyone who's ever worked for us and moved away, just to see what they're wearing, of course, and where they're wearing it.
Minus magical powers though, I'm reduced to wondering and waiting for someone to show up with stories and snapshots.
Lucky us, Ken flew out to San Francisco last week to style and party with his favorite barbie, Dawn M., our darling ex-Pink-pat, who left Richmond almost 2 years ago, bound for life in the big city. Ken, stylist extraordinaire and co-owner of Austin's salon and the responsible party for Pink's creative window displays, came back with some great photos of Dawn and her charming husband, John M.
For the time being, she and John, who teaches at an elite boy's school in Pacific Heights and moonlights playing the drums in a band called the Parties, have tuned into San Francisco life, scooping up the opportunity to meet new people, broaden horizons and explore the landscape.
If you're planning a trip to California's City by the Bay, here are a few things that Dawn and John recommend you do:
Immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of Chinatown and witness the busy life of SF's largest Chinese community then eat Dim Sum at Hang Ah Tea Room.
Carve out a few hours for a picnic lunch at Golden Gate Park. While you're there visit the Deyoung museum where currently there's a Vivienne Westwood retrospective on display.
Shop the abundant vintage stores on Haight St (Dawn's fav is Wasteland) and eat cheap but good at Citrus Club.
For a little Beatnik history, head out to North Beach, stopping off first for coffee and croissants at Cafe Trieste on Grant, and later climbing up to Coit Tower to take in the amazing view and sounds of the city. There you can see a flock of wild parrots, yes parrots, that make Telegraph Hill their home.
And surely all visitors will want to take in the energy and sites of downtown in Union Square. There you'll find everything your consumer heart desires like Chanel, Bloomies, H&M, Saks, Levi Store and coming soon Barneys (her 2nd favorite shopping emporium next to Pink). She recommends taking an outside seat at Rulli cafe for cappucino or an adult beverage and enjoying the buzz of the city.
Dawn's top 5 fav shops in SF are:
Behind the Postoffice-the Haight
Villains-the Haight
Azalea-Hayes Valley
American Rag-Pacific Heights
H&M- crazy I know but she says there's a great one in Union Sq
Dawn, our fearless beauty and muse, one with an inherent ability to put together fresh new looks and one who's talent for styling should reward you the big bucks, Pink misses you.
As promised, here are the pictures from last week's Fashion First. In case you missed it, the next Fashion First will be on March 1st when we'll host a Milly fashion presentation. Check out our website for additional details.
It may have been cold outside, but it was hot in Pink last night. As part of Fashion First in Carytown, Pink presented a fashion show of Milly's swim wear to sexy long black dresses by Samantha Treacy. Styled by Richmond's premier hairdresser and stylist, Ken Langston of Austin's Salon and Day Spa, the extraordinary ensembles will be on view next week at www.pinkstore.com under the Fashion First banner. We'll put the pictures up here as soon as we can!
*More about Ken next week as he takes off to New York Fashion Week to style the hair and makeup for Doucette Duval runway show at The Chelsea Hotel.
Richmond photographer and friend of Pink, Eric Norbom presents his new collection, entitled "Super Tycoon Nightclub". Through a family connection he gained entry into one of Hong Kong's exclusive nightclub where he was given the opportunity to shoot a very international crowd. "I wish I could give you more details, but I have to respect the privacy of my client", said Norbom. See the show Friday night as part of Richmond's First Friday's Art Walk at Main Art Gallery at 7pm.
The ProportionofBlu presents a sleek and sophisticated denim collection inspired by the Golden Ratio, a naturally reoccuring sequence of measurements and patterns discovered by ancient philosophers. The Golden Ratio has been admired for centuries for its melding of symmetrical and asymmetrical qualities to create visually appealing creations. Things "in the ratio" have always been perceived as intrinsically beautiful, whether it be Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, the Pyramids of Giza, a Stradivarius violin, the face of a newborn child or the way the stars align in the sky. Designers Terrell Wick and Richard Atkins have taken this philosophy of inherent and intrinsic beauty and created a collection of hand-crafted denim that is "in the ratio". Experience the collection at Pink.

Pink welcomes new designer, Tucker by Gaby Basora. Inspired by her NY East Village neighborhood, she designs dresses and blouses in silk prints that are urban yet pretty. Look for a picture of her in February's Vogue, page 268. She's wearing a leopard print dress now available at Pink.
